About us
What we stand for
Welcome to the Meliskerke butcher shop! We, the 4th and 5th generations of Wisse family, are currently working in our traditional butcher shop. We're joined by a fantastic team of employees from Meliskerke and the surrounding area, whom we're proud of. Our entire business process is geared towards ensuring you enjoy good, healthy, and sustainable meat. We achieve this by preparing the meat for consumption using traditional methods.
Of course, it's not just about the products. That's why we strive for high-quality service. We do this by offering friendly assistance and, if desired, information about our product range.
We also continuously adapt our product range to meet our customers' needs. In recent years, our product range has expanded significantly, including salads, meals, pet food, and vegetarian products.

Since 1891 our family has been passionate about meat
1891
Kees Wisse offered his services as a butcher in 1891
In 1891, Kees Wisse, the founder of our family business, started slaughtering animals at farms and in people's homes. This work was primarily done in the autumn and winter. In the spring and summer, he also practiced thatching. The houses on Valkenburgstraat, called the Seislaagte, were also used for slaughtering cattle and other livestock. If you could look into the barn today, you would see the hooks hanging from the ceiling and wall. A piece of history that is no longer in the family.
1926
The store in Torenstraat is put into use
This changed in 1926. Kees Wisse, along with his sons Janis and Jan, started a shop on Torenstraat in Meliskerke. This was continued in 1961 by Rinus Wisse and his uncle Jan. At that time, the products were delivered to the villages and towns of Walcheren by cargo bike. At the end of World War II, large parts of Walcheren were flooded by bombing of the dikes. Because the dikes had breached, parts of Walcheren were almost impossible to reach. To provide people in places like Zoutelande with meat, the decision was made to deliver orders by boat. This allowed people to continue receiving meat from Butcher Shop Wisse. When Walcheren was dry again, deliveries were made by bicycle. Later, from around 1950, this was done by car.
1975
Renovation of the butcher shop
Rinus, who joined the company in 1961, had the old buildings, which had also been damaged by the salty seawater, demolished in 1974. A new shop and residence were built in 1975. A temporary shop had been built in a large wooden shed at the time to allow sales to continue.
During this time, "sociable dining" has also increased significantly. By capitalizing on barbecues, gourmet meals, and fondues, this has had a significant impact on the product range.
2006
The 4th generation starts
In 2006, the fourth generation (Janis Wisse) took over the butcher shop. Janis had been working there since 1985. Adrian and Julian, Janis's sons, are now working in the business. That's the fifth generation! In the years since the turn of the century, the product range has expanded considerably. This includes (Zeeland) sausages, cheeses, ready meals, salads, and deli meats.
2017
Modernization of the butcher's shop and expansion of the store
In 2017, the store expanded to 104 square meters, doubling its floor space. Over the years, the product range has grown, creating a need for more retail space, which the renovations met. The butcher's workshop has also been renovated. New machinery has allowed for more efficient operation.
2025

With our modern butcher shop, renowned sausage factory, and Zeeland specialties, we're fully up-to-date and can offer our customers delicious and healthy products. We're also grateful to see the fifth generation mastering this trade and adapting to customer demand. Grateful for what we've given, we look to the future with confidence.
